CHAPTER
ELEVEN: REPLIVATOR ACTIVATION
FLASHBACK: ASHES OF THE JUNGLE
The jungle was thick with humidity and silence - unnatural silence. Jack Mason, forty-ish and athletic, CIA, black operative, crouched behind a crumbling wall of the Neuwelt Rittertum’s Manaus research laboratory installation, his black ops team ghosting through the foliage like shadows. The compound, once a hive of bioengineering brilliance and ethical decay, now stood on the brink of oblivion.
“Alpha team, secure the Replivator,” Jack whispered into his comms. “Bravo, sweep for residual BioCore tech. No traces.”
Inside the lab, the air reeked of ozone and antiseptic. Cryo-chambers hissed as they were powered down. Genetic sequencers blinked their final diagnostics. The Replivator - a gleaming monolith of chrome and quantum circuitry—was already being loaded into a reinforced truck, its casing wrapped in Interpol-sealed insulation. This machine gave fully formed life from DNA. A Genesis chamber.
Jack moved with precision, his eyes scanning for anomalies. He knew other interested parties had agents embedded in the region. Chinese and Russian reach was longer than most suspected. If they got their hands on this tech, politicians could reign forever. It would be bio engineered. And, Interpol was close behind.
“Sir,” one of his operatives called, holding up a vial. “Cleopatra’s mitochondrial sample. Tagged and encrypted.”
Jack nodded grimly. “That one goes in the Vatican crate.”
Outside, the trucks rumbled to life, their cargo masked under tarps marked UNESCO Blue Shield. The illusion of preservation cloaked the reality of possession. Jack didn’t like lying to John Storm, but the stakes were too high. If the truth leaked, replication tech would become a beacon for zealots and profiteers alike.
He set the charges himself—thermite, shaped to melt steel and erase data. As the last truck disappeared into the jungle mist, Jack stood alone in the heart of the lab, staring at the place where science had dared to play God.
He pressed the detonator.
The explosion tore through the compound like divine wrath. Flames licked the canopy. Data banks vaporized. The jungle swallowed the screams of machinery and ambition.
From the deck of the Elizabeth Swann, navigating the Amazon, Charley Temple and Dan Hawk turned at the distant boom. They got there before Jack, taking lab notes, computer drives and a strange looking watch, called CyberCore Genetica. And a device called 'BioCore.'
“Guess Jack did his job,” Dan muttered.
Charley narrowed her eyes. “Or he did something else entirely.”
Back in Manaus, Jack watched the fire die down. He tapped his comms again.
“Package secured. Lab destroyed.”
Jack turned away, the jungle closing behind him. In his pocket, a picture of the Replivator — its secrets still intact, its destiny still unwritten.
THE QUIET THEFT OF TRUTH
The Manaus basin steamed under a bruised sky, the jungle exhaling secrets into the dusk. Trucks bearing the insignia of UNESCO’s Blue Shield rolled cautiously through the remnants of Neuwelt Rittertum’s lab complex. Interpol agents, flanked by Brazilian military escorts, catalogued scorched consoles and shattered cryo-tanks. The official CIA inventory—signed and sealed—listed only rudimentary lab equipment, degraded samples, and a few damaged centrifuges.
But the truth had already been spirited away.
In a locked container, the Replivator now rested in silence. Its chrome casing gleamed under torchlight, surrounded by crates marked Liturgical Archives. The support equipment—quantum stabilizers, DNA synthesizers, and encrypted neural interfaces—had been smuggled in via diplomatic pouches, their origins masked by forged provenance and privilege.
Jack Mason, the CIA’s ghost operative, had received his reward: a velvet pouch of uncut diamonds, a gold ingot stamped with the seal of the Knights of Malta, and a promise—never spoken, but understood. His silence had been purchased, his loyalty redirected.
In Paris, UNESCO’s Director of Religious Antiquities, Madame Lucienne Moreau, reviewed the CIA report with furrowed brows. “No mention of advanced cloning tech?” she asked.
Jack Mason, seated across from her in tailored humility, offered a thin smile. “The lab was mostly theoretical. The explosion destroyed anything of consequence. We are grateful for Blue Shield’s vigilance.”
Madame Moreau nodded, unconvinced. “And what is a Replivator?”
“A myth,” Jack replied. “Like the Philosopher’s Stone.”
THE GOLDEN SON OF PYONGYANG
THE DIAMOND EXCHANGE
Jack Mason stood on the roof terrace of a sterile, black-glass skyscraper in Dubai, the arid air thick with the smell of new money and desperation. He felt the weight of the gym bag filled with rough, untraceable stones—the price for a machine that represented the apex of bio-engineering. He was getting filthy rich.
The Replivator, the stolen Swiss-German cloning technology, had been sold to an intermediary—a pale, quiet man who never revealed his principal but spoke with the curt authority of a state agent. Mason had been careful. He had stripped the Replivator of its most sensitive components: the proprietary synapse conditioning module and the BioCore implant circuitry. He’d kept the machine functional but dormant, convinced that without the CyberCore Genetica—the true secret ingredient he now knew John Storm possessed—the purchaser would never unravel its ultimate cloning secrets.
Mason’s plan was sound: let the buyer pay a king’s ransom for a sophisticated paperweight, track its destination, wait for the inevitable failure, and then re-acquire the machine, this time using the Genetica's secrets to become the world’s sole producer of perfect, disposable human bodies.
He watched the intermediary vanish into the haze. “Good riddance,” Mason muttered, tightening his grip on the
diamonds.
ACTIVATION
Three weeks later, Mason sat in his penthouse, nursing a vintage scotch, his confidence radiating. The machine should be inert. It should be waiting.
Instead, his encrypted news feed flashed a code-red alert. The Replivator was activated.
“Impossible,” Mason whispered, the glass trembling in his hand. The Genetica is required for the bio-signature interface!
He had underestimated the brute-force ambition of his purchaser, General Kim Jong Un. The Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea simply couldn't wait for the Continuum's spy games to resolve. His own body, worn down by decades of stress, luxury, and ill-health, was failing. The Replivator was his last hope for immortality.
In the cavernous, sub-terrainian facility outside Pyongyang—a bunker repurposed from a ballistic missile assembly plant—Kim Jong Un had driven his combined DPRK and Xi Jinping’s top Chinese scientists relentlessly. The challenge was not the cloning itself, which the base Replivator could handle, but the missing synaptic bridge necessary to transfer an adult consciousness.
"We will interface it directly!" Jong Un had decreed, pounding his fist on the sterile lab table. "Use the memory upload technology from Beijing. We will treat the brain as a hard drive!"
Working around the clock, his programmers and the elite Chinese engineers had developed a terrifyingly effective computer-generated memory interface. They bypassed the need for the BioCore entirely, uploading manufactured experience directly into the newborn clone's cortex. The clone was birthed, removed, and rapidly schooled.
THE UNVEILING
The chamber was kept at a steady eighteen degrees Celsius, its walls lined with polished black granite. General Kim Jong Un, sweat glistening on his face despite the cold, stood before his inner circle, a triumphant, almost spiritual light in his eyes.
He gestured dramatically to a figure standing immobile on a raised platform.
It was a prototype Replicant clone of himself.
Kim Jae-Won (김재원). The name was chosen to resonate with destiny: "Rich in talent" or "Source of greatness."
He was young—perhaps thirty-five—the perfect age of peak charisma and strength that the General himself had never truly enjoyed. He was taller than the original, his frame taut and athletic, his skin eerily perfect, without the historical blemishes or the tell-tale pallor of a life lived in decadence.
"Behold," Jong Un proclaimed, his voice thick with emotion, "the future of our glorious regime. My Golden Son."
The Replicant was breathtakingly flawless. The technicians, relying on neural plasticity principles, had flooded Kim Jae-Won's rapidly developing brain with decades of fabricated experience: the history of the Juche ideology, the communist protocols, the necessary resentment of the West, and, most importantly, the specific, intricate memories of Kim Jong Un's political victories.
"We have solved it," declared the lead Chinese scientist, a man named Dr. Lei, bowing low. "We have provided the clone with the necessary context and allegiance. He is you, General, optimized."
Kim Jae-Won turned his head slowly, his eyes—deep, unnervingly focused—meeting the General's. He offered a small, knowing smile, a look of serene confidence that was utterly missing from the original.
"Father," the Replicant said, his voice a clean, resonant echo of the General's. "I am ready to absorb the final lesson. I am prepared to lead our people to true greatness."
General Kim Jong Un beamed. The technology had not failed him. It had created a superior, bio-engineered vessel, ready to take the reins when his own failing body finally demanded retirement—or a permanent replacement. The global balance of power had just tilted, and no one, least of all the frantic thief Jack Mason, or the hunted Captain Storm, knew the true power that had been unleashed from the labs of Pyongyang.
